The Ultra II version of SanDisks popular line of CompactFlash cards is one that I much prefer over the Classic version any day. The primary reason is speed. No contest. The specifications call for 9mb/s write and 10mb/s read times from this card. Your mileage may vary depending upon equipment and use, but in any case, it is fast. You pay a bit more for the speed, but I feel it is worth it.
I have used both the Classic and Ultra II in a Canon S50 (5 megapixel camera) and the differences are very noticeable. With a full-resolution shot, the write is less than a second. On the Classic SanDisk, you have to wait a few seconds between shots at high resolution. Like it's slower sibling, the Ultra II 1gb will let you take picture after picture without having to swap cards. At the highest resolution, I can take over 400 pictures on one card, at lowest resolution, with the S50, its on the order of over 2000 pictures.
It's great for MP3s as well and I've also used my for making backups of large files from my desktop or laptop.
On the Pocket PC using it in GIS applications (ArcPad) you'll notice a marked improvement in redraw times of maps
