If you install QuickTime, the default settings create a desktop icon and also an icon in your system tray
that shows up everytime you start your computer. You can remove the icon from your tray by right-clicking
it and selecting Exit, but it will be there again the next time you restart.
Disabling it is not as intuitive as it used to be.
For the Current version:
- Right-click the icon and select QuickTime Preferences
- Next, select Advanced tab (farthest to right)
- Locate the option Install QuickTime icon in system tray in the "Tray Icon" area near the bottom and uncheck the box next to it.
- Exit the preferences by selecting OK
- This should remove the icon from your tray and it should not be there the next time you restart your computer.
For the Older version:
- Right-click the icon and select QuickTime Preferences
- Next, select Browser Plug-in
- Locate the option QuickTime system tray icon and uncheck the box next to it.
- Exit the preferences by closing the window (click the X at the top right, there is no OK or Cancel
- This should remove the icon from your tray and it should not be there the next time you restart your computer.
