Inserting a Memory Card (Compact Flash, Secure Digital etc) makes Pocket PC Run Slow, Hang, or Freeze

To Index of Tips and Tricks and Reviews

If you insert a Compactflash (CF) or Secure Digital (SD) etc memory card into your Pocket PC and find that the performance degrades and even trying to bring up a listing of files in Word Excel seems to take forever, this tip should fix it. See Explanation at bottom of this page for description of the ignore_my_documents file and what it does.

Insert the Memory card into the Pocket PC. Connect the Pocket PC to your computer and make sure that Active Sync is running correctly.

On the Active Sync Screen on your Desktop Computer, click Explore

This will bring up a file listing of your Pocket PC.

Double click on My Pocket PC and you should get a root level listing of your Pocket PC

Double click on the Storage Card that you wish to check.

If there is not a file called My Documents, create it (right click, and select New Folder)

Once My Documents has been created, copy any Word or Excel etc files from the main level of the storage card into the My Documents folder.

Finally, locate the file called ignore_my_documents

If you do not see the file, goto Tools on the file explorer and select Folder Options. Then select the View tab (second from the left at the top) and under Hidden Files and Folders, make sure that radio button next to Show hidden files and folders is selected. Then go back to find the ignore_my_documents file. You may have to select View from the menu bar and then Refresh (bottom option)

Once you have found the ignore_my_documents file, right-click on it, and select delete.

Repeat this process for any storage cards you have.

Explanation: The ignore_my_documents file is a flag that tells the Pocket PC to not default to looking only in the My Documents folder when looking for files. When this happens, programs like Word or Excel will search the entire card for documents or spreadsheets which of course takes much longer than simply looking only in My Documents.
