Restoring MS Reader without Reactivating

Microsoft only allows you to use your email address to activate a device a certain number of times (currently I believe that number is eight) But, what happens if you have activated your PPC multiple times because you've had to do hard resets (which clears the memory)?

If you save a few files from your Pocket PC to a backup on your desktop computer or to a storage card, you can avoid having to reactivate your Pocket PC the next time you do a hard reset.

Stop all the running programs by going to Start -> Settings -> System -> Memory -> Running Programs -> Stop All This will ensure that MS Reader has been unloaded from memory and that the files are in a state where you can safely copy them. Using the File Explorer on your Pocket PC, go to the Windows directory and locate the following files:

  1. Microsoft Activation.Unload
  2. Secrep.dat
  3. Secrep.dll
  4. Secrep.xml
  5. Secrepid.dat
Once you have found those files, copy them to your PC (See Tip 01) or to a storage card for safe keeping. If you find that you have to do a hard reset in the future, simply make sure that you have stopped all running programs as shown above and then copy the files from your PC or storage card back into the Windows folder and do a soft reset (NOT a hard reset!)
